What is Peyronie’s disease?

Peyronie’s disease is a noncancerous connective tissue disorder, and a rare form of erectile dysfunction (ED). Those with Peyronie’s disease have a bent or curved erect penis. The issue arises when scar tissue, called plaque, forms inside the penis, resulting in an irregular erection.

Approximately 1 in 100 men over the age of 18 have been diagnosed with Peyronie’s Disease, but researchers believe that more than 1 in 10 men may have the condition based on studies(1).

Symptoms of Peyronie's Disease

Every case of Peyronie’s disease is different. Your symptoms and their severity may differ from others who have the condition, and your symptoms may surface slowly over time or appear immediately.

Do you have Peyronie’s disease? If so, you may be experiencing one or several of the following symptoms in or around your penis:

  • Scar tissue (lumps or hard tissue)
  • Shortening
  • Curving (upward or downward)
  • Bending
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Popping sounds
  • Popping sensations
  • Inability to maintain an erection
  • Blood in urine
  • Difficulty urinating

If experiencing curving, bending, or shortening due to Peyronie’s disease, these symptoms may intensify without treatment, causing a greater negative impact on your life.

What effect does Peyronie’s disease have on your life?

If you’re suffering from Peyronie’s disease, you’re likely living with several of the symptoms mentioned above. Two of the most common symptoms, in addition to the curving or bending you’re likely experiencing, are pain and erectile dysfunction (ED). Pain and ED can have a debilitating impact on your life.

Peyronie’s disease may result in:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Lack of interest in or difficulty having sex
  • Concerns of penile shortening
  • Difficulty getting an erection
  • Difficulty maintaining an erection

With the help of your urologist, you can get a clear picture of your urological health, and learn what steps you should take to reduce or eliminate some of the symptoms of Peyronie’s disease.
